I met 90 seventh graders today. They did not inflict any permanent damage. In fact they were pretty fun. I have one class that has a lot of "chemistry" in it. Three boys will probably be moved within the week.
I have a "day off" tomorrow because the 8th & 9th graders will be the only ones on campus. I'll be doing my third revamp of lesson plans as I adjust to the ever changing schedule at school. My kids will take the DRP next Friday--my first standardized test!
I'll be thinking of you all tomorrow. You are amazing professionals!

You're so awesome Rillene! I survived my first and second days. Barely. Ha ha, just kidding. But, I already had to talk to one of the asst. principals about one of my students. He used profane language on a paper. That would happen to me on the first day. But, it's already taken care of, and they took him out of my class. We'll see how the rest of the week goes.
You win the first day prize! Sounds like a "situation of the day" day. You should tell Kay, if you haven't already. So were you doing a journal entry or an assignment of some sort?
Are you discovering that your lesson plans get shot to pieces by things the school wants you to do? I've learned that on picture day they take the kids out of English class, they want us to come do a library tour, and now they are planning a post-intro-to-7th-grade assembly...again taking the kids out of English. I keep wondering when I'll actually get a whole period to teach. The more seasoned teachers are all excited about getting out of class.
Guess it's just newbie over exciteability on my part.
love the picture! It's good to know that surviving the first day is possible! Good luck!
I hear ya Rillene...picture day, assembly, another assembly, come in and talk about scholarships...it's crazy!
As for my first days...good...I rather enjoyed the boy who told me he was transferring out because I wouldn't let him sleep. :D
How dare you ask a kid to stay awake!!! You are so unreasonable! I'd probably leave your class too if you asked so much. :)
Second full day of teaching today--went really well, but I have 180 papers to grade--Yikes!!!! Actually one is just a check off assignment and the other is a "School Handbook Quiz" I made to help me see how well they follow directions and how well they can use informational text features. The check off assignment was a pre-assessment of some of the core grammar skills--capitalization, periods, and commas in a series. I used that "Dear John" letter--the one where the meaning depends on the punctuation. It was so funny to watch these kids tackle that. They wanted to add words to make it say what they wanted it to say. I have a feeling they are all over the place as far as competency goes.
